"A Big Disappointment" – Ibrahima Konaté Slams Liverpool’s Lack of Intensity in Bitter Old Trafford Defeat

The Premier League title race took a significant hit as Liverpool suffered a frustrating 3-2 defeat against Manchester United at Old Trafford. Despite a spirited second-half fightback, the Reds were left empty-handed after failing to sustain their momentum. Ibrahima Konaté did not hold back in his post-match assessment, labelling the result a "big disappointment" and pointing to critical errors that defined the encounter.

A Sluggish Start and Defensive Lapses

Liverpool’s afternoon began in disastrous fashion, conceding two goals within the opening 15 minutes. Matheus Cunha opened the scoring early on, followed quickly by a strike from Benjamin Sesko. Konaté was particularly vocal about the avoidable nature of these early setbacks, stating that the team conceded goals they "must not concede" at the start of a match.

The French defender highlighted a major issue in the first half: the lack of physical presence. According to Konaté, Manchester United dominated the "50-50" challenges, winning most of the physical battles across the pitch during the first 45 minutes.

The Second-Half Resurgence

The half-time talk seemed to spark a change in the Reds' mentality. Liverpool emerged from the tunnel with renewed aggression and pressing, which paid dividends almost immediately. Dominik Szoboszlai halved the deficit just two minutes into the second half. Shortly after, Cody Gakpo scored his 50th goal for the club to restore parity at 2-2.

"In the second half we came back with a great mentality," Konaté explained. He noted that the team utilized their pressing and aggressiveness to hurt the opponents and claw back into the game. At that stage, with the energy and desire to win, it felt like Liverpool had the upper hand.

The Final Blow and Looking Ahead

However, the recovery was undone in the 77th minute when Kobbie Mainoo scored the winning goal for United. For Konaté, the defeat is particularly "sad" because it wasted a massive opportunity to secure three vital points.

As the season approaches its final stretch, the focus now shifts to defensive stability. Konaté emphasized the need to analyze why the third goal was conceded and to work hard to ensure a strong finish. The goal remains clear: maintaining a solid position for Champions League qualification. For a club of Liverpool's stature, learning from these "pecados de juventude" at Old Trafford will be essential if they are to bounce back in the coming weeks.
